It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that I am writing at this moment. Our incredible, generous, spirited and beloved friend Roberto lost his battle with ALS this morning. Many of you only met him in the last few years while he was in a wheelchair, others have know him for decades as a friend who becomes family, as a captain who could always keep the peace, as an enduring optimistic spirit and one fantastic ball player. He had the kindest smile and a compliment for everyone. I for one will remember him as being one of the most gracious humans I have ever met (and one of the best batting advisors too). He was a patriarch in his family as he was a leader amongst his friends.

Please forgive us for not being able to call each and every one of you personally.

Funeral and Wake information will be sent out as soon as arrangements have been made by his family.

If you need further information, please feel free to contact Mimi at mimi.gaber@gmail.comor Andrew or Kitty Martin at: kitand96@juno.com

Roberto was always what Cats and Dogs is about for me. He was always encouraging, non-judgmental, and willing to coach (but only if you asked–which is how I prefer my coaching). He protected me from obnoxious passers-by. And never laughed too hard when I made another comical error. Mostly, I will always remember him as sweet, athletic, and funny. Even when he was in tremendous pain, I saw him make a roomful of people laugh. Just by blinking.

Roberto: I will miss you! :-(

In this season, when we are faced with perhaps the most challenging opportunity to stay in touch with and aware of the things, people and experiences that matter, even though they are the hypothetical focus, I do find solace in having a relatively new pool of peeps that do this as a collective better than most. Roberto, as an individual, was exemplary of this, and the resulting love he has been and will continue to be shown by the cohorts of softball is an earned and honorable gift. I have known him for significantly less time than so many of you, but was taken in by him upon first meeting. From his wippersnappering of Adam’s batting technique, to the winking smile that made whatever lucky lady he honored it with (including this one) feel thier most beautiful, to the perserverence and honesty with which he faced his most tremendous battle with ALS, Roberto left footsteps to walk in. I am humbled to have had my world graced by his presence, and motivated by the mutually shared characteristics of he and all of you that comprise this crazy thing called “Cats and Dogs Sunday Softball.” May his persona reinforce in all of us our appreciation for all that we have throughout this stretch of time, often referred to as “the holiday season.” I wish you all a happy, healthy and grateful thanksgiving and beyond. God bless Roberto and his whole family. kathleen.
