Dear Cats and Dogs,
Cat Captain Terry is off to Montana until the game on August 28th. Meantime the Mad Dogs (9-3 first place) have their first playoff game: Mad Dogs “1” vs. Frozen Ropes “4”: Monday August 1st at 6:30 pm Thomas Jefferson Field (112th and 1st Ave).

Good luck to you Mad Dogs, you should win it all, sadly for me, without your left fielder of 20 years.

Note re equipment and August.  See Beerman Smokey if Andrew or Kitty isnt at Hechsher #5.  Smokey has a bag with balls and bases stashed in the box behind #4. Remember to return it.

Also join the Cats and Dogs facebook group.  There will be a party in the off season so make sure you are register with an email here or in the fb group.

Hard to believe but for 19+ years the Yorkville Sports League Championship has evaded the Mad Dogs (formerly the Fetchers, the Bad Dogs and now the Mad Dogs), the splinter group of male Cats and Dogs players, who from 1992 wanted a more competitive game than the coed Sunday softball game.  This year the MD’s are 3-2 with a chance of winning it all.  We have been to the semi finals several times and have made the playoffs about 10 times.  The only players from the original Mad Dogs playing today are Andrew and Terry.  Not to be sanguine but the team has lost some of its original greats: Mean Joe Sweet, to cancer, and Fast Will Daniels, to other folks bad driving.  Later Saint Roberto Rosado, to ALS and Quicksilver Luis Pellecier to complications from Hepatitus.

Despite these losses the Mad Dogs has had a farm team in the Cats and Dogs where the best players have been given a chance to shine when regulars cant make it.  The  current Mad Dogs team has some semi regulars at the Sunday Game: Jeremy, Tovi, and Richie (the late Roberto’s nephew).  We all love our softball and all hate the rain, BUT LOVE OUR FANS.  We are always the oldest team by 10-15 years and we alway pride ourselves on defensive efforts.  The term “a Mad Dogs inning” is however not a compliment and usually refers to an inning where there are 2 walks, 2 errors, 2 hits and 6 runs scored against.

AS THE SEASON PROGRESSES WE HOPE SOME OF YOU WILL COME AND WATCH !   Next game is 6:30 PM Thursday at Jefferson Field #3 (112 and 1st) . TERRY

Hi Everyone

It is Memorial Day weekend and turnout has been low lately so there will be no game this Sunday.

We will be back out there on 6/6/10. Hope to see you there.

Andrew and Terry

Hi Cats and Dogs

It is very wet out there and the rain is supposed to continue all day so there is no game today.

Remember if you want to get the status of the fields you can call the Central Park hotline at 212-628-1036- then punch in ext 807 right away to go directly to the status for our fields.

I also want to let everyone know that the annual New York City ALS walk is Saturday, May 15th. As most of you know we lost a close friend, Roberto Rosado, to ALS a few years ago. Roberto participated in the ALS walk in his wheelchair in the years before he died and it was something that meant a lot to him. Since his death, his sisters, Ivette and Rachel, have continued to participate in the walk. In the last few years several of us including Randy, Max, Dale, Arthur, Richie and myself have done the walk with them.

For anyone interested, below is a note Ivette forwarded about this year’s walk.

The Walk in New York will take place on
                        Saturday, May 15,2010   @ 11a.m.
Hudson River Park, Pier 46       (Charles Street and West Side Highway)
                         New York, NY
If anyone is interested in making a donation or in doing the walk, please go to “Roberto’s Iron Horses”.  That’s the name of my team.  From there, you will be able to sign in and register and or make a donation. The walk is 5k ( about 2.75 miles)   Thank you so much for your time and may God bless you.
All the best,
Ivette and family
If you have trouble finding the website please let me know.

See you next Sunday

Hi cats and dogs

To update everyone about the game last Sunday- Dale (or the “kid from Cleveland” as he likes to call himself) is a little bruised up but doing okay. For those of you not at the game: Dale, while catching, was involved in a scary collision at the plate. A very agressive player ran into him at full speed.  Dale sat out the rest of the game but was well enough to enjoy a cigar and a beer as usual.  He got himself checked out at the doctor and is ok. Dale is pushing for a ban of the offending player but the commisioners are still reviewing the matter.

In over 20 years of playing in this Sunday game (about 30 years for Terry) we haven’t seen injuries much more serious than some pulled muscles, some black and blue marks and of course several bruised egos, and we would like to keep it that way.

As for this coming Sunday, it looks as if the fields will be open but it may rain. We will post something in a few days.

take care

Andrew

Hi everyone

The permit is up but we will be out today. If field 5 is being used we will be on another field. It is getting dark earlier so try to get there by 4:30 so that we can get a game in.

Hope to see you out there.

I’m not sure if this went out. Sorry if it is a repeat.

Hey Cats and Dogs

For all of you in town this Labor day weekend, we will be out there on Sunday as the fields are only open for a few more weeks.  I will not get there until about 6:00 but Terry is back in town and will be there earlier. The sun sets by 7:30 so we want to get started as early as possible.

Hope to see you there.

Hi Everyone

Today is the last day of the permit this year (although we hope to get in 2 or 3 games in September before the fields close). The softball fields hotline (212-628-1036  then press 807 right away) has a message that the fields are closed but may be open later today. Looking at the weather now and the forecast I would think that they will be open.

Hope to see you all out there.

Andrew
